It’s official: football has come home!
On July 31, the UEFA European Women’s Championship ended with a special England victory over Germany. The historic match did not disappoint; both teams fought valiantly as they went head-to-head for the title. The game went on for over 60 minutes before either team conceded a goal, when England’s Ella Toone chipped the ball into the net over Germany’s goalie, Merle Frohms. Wembley went wild. The dream was in sight!
Despite the German comeback, England never gave up hope. And when 24-year-old Chloe Kelly knocked in the final goal during extra time, it was clear that England had done it. The stadium was electric – and the players lapped up every second of it.
A moment like this in any sport is unparalleled. But for women’s football, this year's Euro tournament will change the sport in the UK forever. My job when attending these games is to capture the action for the world’s media to distribute and audiences to enjoy. Shutterstock has had a strong presence at the Women’s Super League games for years now.
However, the 2022 Euro Championship reflected the growing stature of the women’s game in a way I’ve never seen it before, as seen by the number of media and photographers in attendance. I know it is an incredibly important part of my job to keep my lens on this game to continue to drive exposure of women’s football, to inspire future generations and increase investment in the sport.
