MARGAO: Several animal lovers from various parts of Mormugao taluka have joined hands to form a group, with a special mission to prevent road accidents and protect stray animals.
The group which comprising of social workers and even municipal councillor (Prajay Mayekar) has now started a novice step to put reflector belts around the necks of various stray cattle that are usually found loitering the roads during the nights .
The group on Saturday late night joined hands to put reflector belts on the necks of the cattle in Vasco city and will replicate the action in the suburbs like Baina, Mangor, New Vaddem ,Sada and also in other parts of the entire Taluka .
The group arranged for huge quantity of vegetables and gathered the cattle at one point before carefully putting up the reflectors on their necks
Speaking to media, social worker Kiran Naik said that reflectors on cattle would prevent accidents at night saving lives of humans and animals as well.
"We have seen that many heavy vehicles move along the city route at high speed during the night and cattle have been injured due to accidents and decided to have reflectors on the neck of these animals. These belts reflect and emit light in the dark so that the animal wearing it is easily visible to the motorists and thus accidents can be minimised and the lives of both humans and animals can be saved. We have several taken injured cattle to Dhyan Foundation on many occasions, " said Naik
Naik urged the people to stop being cruel to animals after it was reported that boiling water was poured on stray cattle on many occasions.
"We have seen how many cows have been found injured and suffering with excruciating pain when boiling water was poured on them. Sometimes the poor animals were pierced with sharp and pointed objects inorder to drive them away. This is not the right thing to do and people should be humane and apply turmeric on injured animals. The Dhyan Foundation can be called up if any injured cow was spotted and we will rescue it on time," said Naik
Naik also requested the Communidade bodies in Mormugao Taluka to come forward to support their Initiative.
"The communidades have huge tracts of land and we make a fervent appeal to them to provide us some grazing ground for the cattle and also for setting up a cattle pound so that the stray cattle are off the road and accidents are prevented, " said Naik.
