The opening quarter and change of Friday night’s matchup between John Paul II and Wayne Christian had all the makings of a shootout as the teams traded scores in the early going.
Then, near the midway point of the second quarter, things changed, as the Saints used back-to-back key plays on defense and special teams to take control on their way to a resounding 74-32 victory to remain undefeated on the season at 4-0.
John Paul led 29-20 after a 2-yard rushing score by Rion Roseborough with 8:08 left in the second quarter, as the Eagles looked for a response.
On Wayne Christian’s third play of the ensuing drive, Duke Williams took the handoff on a reverse, looking to move the chains on 3rd-and-3. Instead, Nick Garza blew the play up, forcing a fumble and diving on the loose ball to set the Saints offense up at the 19-yard line.
Two plays later, Brody Mitchell took it up the gut from nine yards out to give JP2 a 37-20 lead at the 6:18 mark of the second quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, a pooch kick up the middle was pounced on by Max Winkler.
“We do spend a lot of time with special teams, it’s a really important part of the game,” John Paul II head coach Sean Murphy said. “We saw some things watching film and took advantage of it.”
John Paul II went 35 yards in five plays after that, capped by Roseborough’s third rushing score of the game from five yards out and the home side ballooned its lead to 45-20 with 4:19 remaining in the opening half.
The Eagles got six points back with a score on the next drive, as JP2 went into the half with a 45-26 lead.
To open the second half, the Saints continued their dominant performance on the ground, going 51 yards, all on the ground, in 10 plays, finished off by a fourth touchdown by Roseborough from a yard out to make it a 53-26 game with 7:17 left in the third.
Following a Wayne Christian turnover on downs, a 47-yard connection between Mitchell and Quinn McCaffrey set up Roseborough’s fifth and final score from seven yards out. Roseborough finished the game with 162 yards on 24 carries and the five touchdowns, pacing the Saints’ ground game which finished with 448 yards.
“We don’t throw a whole lot, and when we do you kind of close your eyes and hope for a play,” Murphy said. “We do run the ball well and we always feel like we can wear down opponents.”
John Paul II’s defense continued its strong play by forcing another turnover on downs late in the quarter, then Xavier Lang busted out a 50-yard rushing touchdown on the final play of the quarter to send it into the fourth with the Saints up 67-26.
With a running clock in the fourth quarter, Gentry McMinn scored the Saints’ 10th rushing touchdown of the game from 47 yards out on the eventual final play of the game to bring the final score to 74-32.
The Saints’ defense opened the game with a stand, and Mitchell opened the scoring with a 16-yard score at 7:35 of the first.
Wayne Christian took the ensuing kickoff back 73 yards to bring the score to 7-6 before JP2 used a 12-play drive to add to its lead on Roseborough’s first score of the game.
The teams continued to trade scores before the key defensive and special teams plays allowed the Saints to pull away.
The Rampants claimed their first road win of the season to improve to 3-1 this season.
Rose had a majority of the early chances, and the Rampants cashed in their second touchdown of the night just before the end of the opening quarter to take a 14-0 lead.
That lead stuck through halftime before Rose poured on 16 more unanswered points in the second half en route to the comfortable win.
The home-standing Falcons put a notch in the win column after taking a halftime lead and never relenting down the stretch against the visitors from Fuquay-Varina.
SC (1-3) led 26-13 at the break before outscoring the Storm by a 22-13 count the rest of the way.
Willow Spring held a brief 7-6 lead in the first quarter.
The Rams rolled to 4-0 for the third time in school history with another convincing victory.
Wilkes Thomas connected with Jon Willis on a 45-yard pass play to put GC on the board at 6-0 in the first quarter, and the Rams upped the edge to 12-0 on a Jalen Wynn 12-yard TD.
By halftime, the lead was 28-0 and GC was rolling again. The capper on the night was a Kamari Hall scoop and score following a sack that made it 36-0 in the fourth quarter.
Searching for their first win of the season, Farmville had to stage a late-game scoring drive to claim victory on an Alex Moye 48-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds left in the game.
Farmville (1-3) seized a 15-0 lead in the game but saw that steadily evaporate on the road, dwindling to 15-13 at the onset of the fourth quarter.
Swansboro got on the board late in the second quarter to make it 15-7, then score twice in the second half to take a 19-15 edge, capped by a Hyuga Doreus TD run in the fourth quarter.
Still trailing by four, the Jags got stops on the Pirates on third and fourth down with 2:04 to play, and Farmville marched from its own 26 for the winning score.
The Vikings trailed 17-7 early and could not put a dent in that deficit, falling behind 30-7 by the intermission.
Unbeaten Northern Nash (4-0) extended the lead by two more touchdowns in the second half to make it a blowout.
Conley saw its season record evened at 2-2.
The Chargers were in the hunt again for their first win and went toe-to-toe before falling short again.
The loss came after a furious effort from A-G to stay in the game. Ayden-Grifton (0-4) led 27-26 in the fourth quarter and even picked off a Bruins pass in the end zone to preserve that lead, but the Chargers could not withstand a late Beddingfield scoring drive.
The teams traded blows, and leads, before that. Beddingfield was up 26-21 to open the fourth after overturning a 21-20 A-G edge. The Bruins also led 20-14 in the third after the teams were knotted 14-14 at the half.
The lead also changed hands three times in the first half.
